Music, Bugs and the Hahn's Peak Cemetery

This week was so much fun!
On Monday, we worked on our walking path around the preschool and also got to check out the really neat bike path at the Charter School (courtesy of the fire dept.!). It was pretty neat!
Tuesday, we loaded up the van and headed south for Strings! We were excited to hear the music of Essence (check out her website here!). She sang some silly songs about life and adventures and her giant dog named Moo! The campers loved it all and especially loved dancing to her tunes.

Wednesday, we went up to the Hahn's Peak Cemetery. We had planned on some service activities, and the kids were really excited to collect some sticks and also collect flowers for the tombstones. We learned about rubbings and also talked about the various families, war veterans and others who are laid to rest there. Today, we went to Steamboat Lake Park and worked with the naturalist, Miss Emily to catch some bugs! We caught: moths, butterflies, pointy-tailed bee flies, caterpillars, ants, a dragon fly, beetles and grasshoppers! The kids were absolutely thrilled to use the big nets and trap the bugs. Then we put them in jars so we could examine them before letting them go again.

Its been a great week! I have enjoyed every minute of it and I know the kids have too! Here are some pictures highlighting out week.
Enjoy!

Tadpoles and Chickens! An adventurous week at NRP!

Hello!
This week has been wonderful and full of fun adventures! Monday, we drove up to Steamboat Lake and met Mr. Erik, the naturalist. He taught the campers all about tadpoles! We even got to catch some and inspect them in a small container of water. The kids loved this activity. We are looking forward to attending more naturalist programs at Steamboat Lake in the coming weeks!
Tuesday, we headed a to the Brodman's farm! They have lots of chickens, ducks, pigs and some goats! The campers especially loved the baby goat, Vanilla! We went on a small hike and saw the general workings of the farm, how the chickens and pigs live and where the goats sleep! The campers had so much fun. We ended the afternoon with a wonderful picnic in the shade of the trees by the creek.

Today, we had a slight change of plans and we took the campers up Coulton Creek Trail off of Seedhouse Rd. The campers had a blast counting the slugs and looking out for deer! We saw quite a bit of wildlife and even forged our own trail to the top of a huge hill! We have also been working on a pretty cool mote in the sandbox! The campers made a "hottub" big enough for everyone the other day! Standby for updates as we continue to work on it..

Summer Week 2: Clark Store Hike, Tombstone Trail, Pearl Lake and the Library!

This week has been really fun! On Monday, we hiked to the Clark Store and enjoyed yummy ice cream! Tuesday, we hiked on the Tombstone Trail at Steamboat Lake. This was a particularly fun hike because we borrowed some binoculars and spied on the momma Osprey in her nest. The children also had a great time looking for wildflowers and identifying them using the trail map.

Wednesday, we headed over to Pearl Lake and hiked to the dam! It was pretty muddy, but everyone enjoyed it...we think!
Last but not least, we spent this morning at the library and Little Toots Park! The kids really loved the library and had the best time picking out books to read. We even had a reading party in the van on the way home! Another fun thing we discovered at the library is the fishtank! We had a really great time reading about each type of fish and other sea creatures that live in the tank, it was fun to try and spot the ones we read about.
I hope everyone else is enjoying this wonderful summer! Thankyou for sharing your children with us.
